Stone age technology in a new age country. Can technology save India?
Sitting a thousand miles away, the news of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai brought on panic attacks, late thursday night.
Now, days later, I’m still glued to ibnlive, watching, every minute i don’t have to be in class.
The speed at which the anti-social groups’ operations are becoming sophisticated was a Class A Whack in the Face. From crude home made bombs used in ill-planned operations, thrown in random places, trails of evidence left uncovered by untrained, uneducated, bands of furious men, these elements have now evolved into stratified, organized groups of educated, skilled killing machines, meticulously planning their operations, sourcing state of the art weapons and top of the line ammo. So much so that nearing 72 hours after the begin of the attack, and despite the loss of all but 3 of their men, they still hold fort at one of the locations where they launched their panic campaign – the Taj Mahal Hotel.
Is our defense system equally fast in countering, and in fact, developing defensive and preventive technology? Are we training our defense squads with the latest equipment, are we using state of the art technology for detection, location, offensive action on these terror elements that seem hell bent on preying on our social peace? We all agree, not.
Technology today is at a different level altogether. It can be your eyes, ears, hands and guns. It can be you from halfway around the world. But we still wait for the Minister sitting in Kerala to wake up and come to Bombay till we take a decision.
We have technology like radar and ultra wideband. These technologies let you see through walls as thick as they make them – in any material, reinforced steel, wood, cement, anything. Ultrawideband can accurately detect and track motion of people within buildings. We have unmanned vehicles all over the world – we have them even on the moon and mars. These can be loaded with optical equipment, even defensive equipment. They’re about as big as a cell phone, can be controlled from outside and can be made very quiet.
These instruments are being developed in ordinary engineering colleges in india – not in high end million buck laboratories. They are not hyper-expensive. They are not unknown to the country. They can save so many lives and support so many strategies! Why do we see such a stark lack of any integration of these in our defense mechanisms? Why did 3 of our top cops choose to take a blind plunge?
Why do I keep seeing a doddering old man making ineffectual statements while troops of brave men, sadly ill equipped, give up their lives one after another? Why doesn’t the old man stop making statements and start talking to tialinx? He doesn’t even need tialinx, there’s enough of us around to acutally want to help develop this stuff ourselves, but the old man and his friends are SO busy covering their a**es, they can’t seem to spare a bit of time to ACTUALLY think about the country and it’s need to at least survive; not have it’s face bombed off.
What is it going to take – to bring some peace back into our society?
Praying for an answer and for the brave men who pur India before their lives.

Life-in-a-box
One of the things I love about Holland is how you start exerting yourself physically here. Im back to cycling and yesterday (and today) some friends of mine said, and i quote, “Aarabi, haven’t you been eating anything? you look half your size!”
I mean like WOW dude! And this when Iv been GORGING on chocolate to work off the stress generated by the electromagnetics exam prep – i felt like the damn hunchback of notre dame with the freakin himalaya on my back – all last week – it was the exam week from HEll y’all – you can imagine how much chocolate i ate – i spent 20 euros on it in one week. Honour Bright -and I’m half my size – MUHAHahhahaha
Also, cycling in Holland really allows me to release the tension and antipathy i’d accumulated, at home, before I came over to Holland.
Here, cycling against the wind is like fighting a huge powerful force who’s PUSHING you away from him harder and harder – throwing in bridges and cobblestones to boot – fighting against this MAGNIFICENT wind, you feel strong. You feel independant and free. You believe in yourself, for some absurd reason, simply because you’re pedalling through the mad wall that’s determined to push you back. And the ride through that wild wind makes me amazingly happy. Biking against the torrent of invisible strength, just the raw grit of having to push through it makes me feel like i’ve won a battle that day. I feel elevated.
There’s also something to be said for the social air of the place. Nobody judges you. You’re just accepted, liked and welcomed for what you are. The change and difference you bring to a group is celebrated as a refreshing new perspective. Isn’t this the kind of environment where the imagination thrives? why am i not surprised i feel so emancipated here in this country.
So why the resentment in me? I think it was because, like many of us, I chose to fight a lot of stereotypes at home. The personality/ideas/life decisions – in-a-square-box syndrome which afflicts the majority of middle class tamil girls today never appealed to me; not because of some vulgarity in its common-ness but because of the lack of ANY sustainable foundation whatsoever on which it is built (so to the trolls – im not judging you, nor am i being high and mighty). By and large (I’m talking majority here and I’m aware there are other exceptions besides me) these girls are expected to graduate as engineers, a teeny tiny percentage may do a masters, all of them get placed in certain software companies and go on to get married and settled. It’s an easy decision and the girls dont have to take any risks, any stress, face any unforseen and unknown circumstances – and they’re safe and happy. But what about thinking beyond that pattern? It’s going to be an interesting society in 30 years if the majority of our population, especially the women, are IT engineers only, dont you think?
Refusing to be Coy Lady Soft Words and having as much drive as the guys around me drew plenty of criticism and bad love. Adding salt to the wounds, being compared to and being admonished to emulate the very sterotype I was going against the very grain of, rubbed me up the wrong way
It was one hell of an interesting few months when I’d come home from university
So the bad blood. But it’s great to be in a place where people enjoy you and love you for you. I love my country and I dont belong anywhere else. But i think the low risk threshold of us Indians need some serious looking at before we can become any world power.
Think about it peeps
love y’all!
Cheers and have a great day!!
Blamin’ it on the Boogie :D
Sorry for posting so late – i had the TENSOR electromagnetics exam today!! The oral exam!! And i got through! Yayy me!
Im SO Happy here!!
I live in an (albeit overpriced), private spacebox – yes its really called that – and looks like this -
yup! i live in one of those microwave cubes! Right on the top floor! My box is orange and i love love love it!!! It’s just the right size for me – a tiny little shower and a tiny shelf kitchen, bar fridge under my conduction stove and sink. I love living this little crazy hippie style – Iv got NO idea how long before I start cursing this – though I’m sure as hell going to enjoy this while I can
Iv got a couple of mirror pieces from Ikea and stuck ‘em up on the only available real estate wall space – i stuck a couple of cardboard boxes under it, put an ikea DIY drawer box on top of the makeshift table and VOILA! Mirror/Dresser! My wonderful large work table has all my favorite nerd books close by.
The whole of the spacebox window which you see above is parallel to my bed. It’s just like the one in the picture below. So when i wake up, I see beautiful glinting sunshine on green leaves. More recently, its been twinkling bronze twigs and gentle autumn colours swirling in the magnificent wind in this country.

My worst problem is managing my finances. Grumpy grumpy – *waves hands* – *Does a little jig – Don’t blame it on the sunshine!
Don’t blame it on the moonlight!
Don’t blame it on the good times, blame it on the boogie!! If you don’t know that song, go NOW google that or youtube it – awesome!! LOve it!! Makes me feel better always!!
*
Sure my weekends look wonderfully snazzy – international parties, cosy cook outs, fun, laughter, rioting without a care in the world – my weekdays are the exact anti – thesis of All That. Take a look -
I’m home from classes at half past five -
and so it goes on -
and after -
Okay – and I’m REally tired – brain numbing work done – finger numbing work coming up next
Mostly, by the time it’s all done, it’s time to get back to class in the morning
Lol I’ve got so many things I want to talk about – its past three am
I have transmission systems design tomorrow morning and im running on orange juice and mauja hi mauja
There’s a plan in the offing of going to Belgium and France for Christmas – Me thinks me needs a job – NOW
I just put on “Yeh Ishq hai” from jab we met on youtube
and started prancing around
in my usual mental way
i really really really really miss my roommates laughing at me like im a crazy freak dancing around at 2 am. Poor guy living downstairs – I had a smart comment to make here – and as usual i’ve promptly forgotten
Haan! Hai koi to wajah,
jo jeene ka mazaa yun aane laga!!
Hai yeh hawaon mein hai kya, jo thoda sa nasha
hai chaane laga!
Have a great day peeps!!
love from me as always!

Management of Technology and things not related to it at all…
Engineers unite!!!!! We need to become managers!!! (but if you dont, its okay, too – it means more money for me.)
I couldn’t believe my ears today!! I’m so glad i’ve made the decision to master in technology before i master in the management of it!!
We just started our new quarter of study and today we had our first class on Management of technology.
We were discussing innovation management and the prof was discussing radical vs incremental innovation and the necessary requirements for the two to be possibly realized.
In example, he was talking about the advent of wireless communication vs the advent of having, say, streaming video in your mobile phone.
Disclaimer: My mouth was *surprisingly* ENTIRELY shut during the whole class – i swear i picked on nobody.
So the prof asks us what all we need to realize these and one boy says – ‘we need infrastructure’. I am a TELECOM engineer and he is absolutely CORRECT – you need more bandwidth and better modulation, encoding and error correction and protection schemes in place, if your going to send video.
But next, up pops this one lil management popinjay and with supreme arrogance, flaunts – “No! You don’t need any kind of infrastructure for this change! You’re just going to send streaming video the same way as you sent the other stuff” *the prof had referred to sms and voice*
David (another telecom engineer from Equador, sitting with me) and I, simply laughed our asses off at him (discretely – we’re bettered mannered)
If you’re going to make outrageous statements, the least you can do is offer it as an opinion – as opposed to a challenge!!
I really am not surprised that we have things like financial crises, energy crises, stock market storms and things like that if all that management schools teach is confidant idiocy and disregard for humility orANY understanding of the subject at hand whatsoever.
